To Nap or Not to Nap, That is the question

Alexis will be four years old in December and she is quickly becoming more vocal about her own opinions. She has decided she does not want to take naps anymore. Our compromise has been that she at least needs quiet time even if she does not sleep. Last night we had a HUGE meltdown by the end of the day. Alexis kicked, screamed, yelled and hollered a good 45 minutes in her room. She was SO tired and every little thing set her off. I asked her to brush her teeth and she blew up at me.
Many people are surprised I was able to get Alexis to nap until recently, but I think it is still a necessity. How do you decide? Is it a daily decision based on how that day is going? But then everyone says consistency is the key. Any advice? Anyone?
I can't handle daily meltdowns...

As you know, Abigail stopped napping at 18 months. The only time she gets to nap is when she wakes up before 7 am or she is sick. Otherwise, we are up until midnight or later. She doesn't throw tantrums about it anymore. But she did. For a long time. It's probably just a phase. Quiet time is always good because she might fall asleep by herself. Make it dark and have her lay down and watch a movie with a blanket. Sometimes it works. Good luck.

Wow. Miriam stopped at 2 years even though (like you say) she still needed one. It's only now that she's actually finally grown out of it where she's not cranky all afternoon. Quiet time is good. I set out a few activities for her in her room and that's it for an hour or so. Good luck!

azure is 4.5 and still takes a nap about every other day. (no schedule in this house. the kid has to roll with it or she'd never see her dad.) i've noticed lately that if i send her to her room for a "timeout" she usually ends up falling asleep. i believe preschool kids will get the sleep they need one way or another. yesterday she slept in until 9:15am. i guess things will have to change when she starts school... good thing that's not until next year.
